SpaceX have recently announced that they have raised an investment of $1 billion from Google and Fidelity Investments - giving SpaceX a valuation of $10 billion.
Together, the two companies now own just under 10% of the SpaceX. Don Harrison, Google’s vice president for corporate development, will join SpaceX’s board.
The investment shows that Google want to cooperate with SpaceX in the future. Google have ambitions for a satellite internet that would reach the most remote parts of the world. With the purchase of Skybox Imaging for $500 million last year, many also speculate that imaging satellites for imaging could be launched by SpaceX in this new collaboration.
For SpaceX, this partnership could be lethal. With Musk’s aim of a worldwide internet constellation of 4000 satellites, Google’s expertise in the internet may be a necessity.
