ULA wants you to decide the name of their next rocket! Yes, really. The United Launch Alliance, who currently fly the Delta and Atlas rockets, have decided to allow the public to choose the name of what they call a ‘next generation launch vehicle’. Three names have been decided to be put to the public: Eagle, Freedom and GalaxyOne. Although some would argue they’re not the most inspiring names, the idea of SpaceX’s Falcon on one launchpad and ULA’s Eagle on the other certainly isn’t the worst idea.
“ULA’s new rocket represents the future of space — innovative, affordable and reliable,” said Tory Bruno, ULA’s president and CEO. “More possibilities in space means more possibilities here on Earth. This is such a critical time for space travel and exploration and we’re excited to bring all of America with us on this journey into the future.”
The new rocket will have an American engine to power it, reducing the dependency on Russia and therefore ensuring access to space via ULA. The engine is being built in cooperation with Blue Origin, and will be the largest methane-burning engine ever flown. Two BE-4 engines will be used on the first stage of the rocket, generating 550,000 pounds of thrust each.
