This incredible image from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope shows the amazing structure of the NGC 7714 galaxy. The spiral galaxy was first discovered by John Herschel in 1830, in the constellation of Pisces ‘just’ 100 million light-years from Earth.
The smoky golden haze that extends from the galactic center is full of sun-like stars that have been pulled into deep space. The reason for this is all because of neighbouring galaxy NGC 7715. 200 million years ago the two galaxies drifted too close together, and the gravitational interaction between the two caused dramatic changes to the once normal spiral galaxy.
The image was taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 and the Advanced Camera for Surveys in October 2011.
